In the last quarter of a century, solar pool heating has come a long way.
It's evolved from a primitive, jerry-rigged
hodgepodge of makeshift designs and materials into a solid,
dependable, proven technology generally considered to be the most widespread and cost-effective
use of solar available today.
here for a short history of pool solar in Southern California
We at Environmental Solar Design,
Inc. believe that solar pool heating should be designed and tailored
to your specific needs and budget, and presented in such a way that is easy to understand. We pride
ourselves on providing you with the straight facts about what solar heating can and cannot do.
We feel that this approach serves
you best. Unfortunately even without the tax credits, some elements
of phase one solar salesmanship still abound. These questionable tactics range from frantic claims of the
highest Btu per panel test rating to claims of revolutionary design breakthroughs that defy not only
common sense but the laws of physics. Generally these sales-inspired exaggerations provide a lot of hot
air, but little useful solar information.
Here are a few articles and web
sites that should help you gain better understanding of pool
solar and how it works:
If after reading through the compilation
of articles and information links that we are providing, you
want to know more design and price specifics, phone us. We can set an appointment with you to
survey your property to determine the feasibility of solar.
The solar technician who surveys
your property will be an experienced professional who's there to
find out your pool heating needs and design a system to meet those needs.
Initially he or she will ask you
a few key questions and determine the optimum orientation for both
efficiency and aesthetics. They will determine the best mounting approach for the panels from the
four different "roof-sensitive" ESDI mounting assemblies. They can discuss the variety of controller
designs that best fit your heating needs and budget, and discuss with you our employee solar
training program. Many of our professionals have over 20 years field experience and can provide
you with a unique personal history of panel and system evolution and the reasons for our current
designs. Collectively, the current ESDI installation staff brings over 150 years of solar heating
experience to your job. They have a nice story to tell.
In the early l980's, we used the Raypak bimetal unglazed pool collector on pools, since Raypak was our main supplier of commercial hot water panels used on over 7,000 apartment units, and because back then, we felt that metal was more durable than plastic. When Raypak was bought out by another company in l984 and discontinued making solar panels, we tried Solarol, a popular solar rubber matting, for a few years. Simultaneously, we used Radco and several other metal unglazed pool panels. They all heated the pools.
In l988, we made the decision to use Heliocol as our sole pool heating panel because of the impressive advance in plastic pool heating technology in general, and because of the firm's corporate stability, unmatched parts and labor warranty, unique design, solid performance and commitment to quality in particular. Chosen by the U.S. Department of Energy to heat the Olympic Pool at Georgia Tech in l996, Heliocol is to date the only solar pool panel to secure the world renowned ISO 9002 quality certification. In the last few years, its two largest competitors have tried to produce Heliocol "clones" or imitations touting the reduced wind-loading and "roof-breathing" advantages of their new panels. What do they say about imitation being the greatest form of flattery?
We have chosen Heliocol because its design enables us to provide what we believe are probably the most "roof-sensitive" mounting applications in the industry, because its warranty is the most comprehensive in the industry, and because its quest for excellence and ongoing product improvement provides us with a confidence and pride that we can share with our clients.
solar pool heating system should be simple, user-friendly and
mdependable. Or looking at it from the perspective a common home
mappliance, it should be like a refrigerator that heats the pool. We
mfind out what you want, design and install it to your needs, set the
mhigh-limit temperature, and let the system do its job without any
mfuss on your part.
mAgain, our purpose in creating this web site is to educate you, so that
myou can make an informed decision on solar pool heating.
mWe believe that this approach - providing you with the facts and
mletting you make the decision - serves you the best. We hope you
